When I began teaching group exercise classes in the 1980s, I didn’t set out to change the way people walk for fitness. But, over time, walking became my exercise of choice, and my Walk at Home program, born in my own fitness center, became the choice of millions of walkers! My reasons were simple. It worked for almost everyone, regardless of size or fitness level. Also, I noticed people who lost weight through walking became healthier and happier in the process.
If you haven’t been on a regular walking program, by all means, start immediately! Everyone knows how to do it, and the health benefits are astounding. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, walking just thirty minutes a day, three times a week reduces the risk of death from all natural caudses by fifty-five percent…that’s right…55%! Walking also keeps you in the midrange of aerobic activity, where fat oxidation is most efficient. And, best of all, walking is something you can continue your entire life!
Although I’m always up for a brisk walk in the fresh air, I find that people do best if they spend most of their exercise time on more “convenient” indoor walking. Although I’m always up for a brisk walk in the fresh air, I find that people do best if they spend most of their exercise time on more “convenient” indoor walking. My Walk at Home programs allow you to employ a variety of side and back steps that work a broader range of muscles than forward walking—it’s a multi-muscle/higher calorie burn than a stroll around the block! Also, bad weather is never an issue when you’re indoors, and if you have a napping child; he can snooze away while you sneak in a good workout. These, and many other benefits, can be enjoyed within the privacy of your own home rather than inside a pricey or crowded gym. With the cost of gas these days, who wants to drive somewhere to exercise anyway!
My bottom line on fitness is and always has been that human beings were meant to move. It’s no secret that the more we move the better we feel. My philosophy is: Exercise for the love of life and the love of good health. Looking good in a swimsuit or a pair of jeans is simply a bonus! Whatever your beliefs are, you have been given an amazing gift—the chance to live a life on this planet. It would be a shame to waste it sitting on the couch.
Walk On, My Friends!
